2010 WSOP
Submitted on Wed, 2010-06-02 05:53 It’s that time of year. The time when the poker world turns it’s eyes to the Mecca of gambling and the site of the annual World Series of Poker (WSOP)-Las Vegas. The first gold bracelet was won on Saturday 2010 Casino Employees Championship Event #1 of the 2010 WSOP was the Casino Employees Championship, which features casino employees. It was first held in 2000 and was called the Dealers World Poker Championship. The next year all casino employees were eligible to enter and the name change was initiated. Hoai D. Pham Wins Event #1 The winner of the first event at the 2010 WSOP is Hoai D. Pham, a dealer from the Village Club Casino in Chula Vista, CA. Pham, who is 43 years old, was born in Vietnam and now lives in San Diego. He won $71,424 after playing in a 15-hour session on Day Two of the event. There were 721 entries in Event #1, which had a $500 buy-in and a prize pool that totaled $324,450. Prize money was divided amongst the top 72 finishers. The final hand saw Pham with pocket aces and his opponent, A.J. Vea, with pocket fours. The community cards did nothing for either player and Pham claimed the top prize with his hole cards. WSOP More Action There is a lot more action to go at the 2010 WSOP with 56 more gold bracelets on the line. The 2010 WSOP runs through July 17 until the Main Event yields just nine players. After that there is a break with the final table for the No-Limit Hold’em Championship being played in November.

He’s played in a number of televised cash games, and the cameras have caught plenty of interesting hands for viewers to discuss. For this edition of Strategy with Kristy, Robl sits down with Kristy Arnett to discuss a few of his most-talked-about televised cash-game hands. To view the hands as they played out on television, check Arnett’s latest blog post. Here is a snippet from the interview, in which Robl discusses a hand from High Stakes Poker [game details and action of the hand are written separately]: Game Lex Veldhuis straddled to $1,600. Phil Ivey raised to $7,000 from the cutoff. Robl had on the button and called. Patrik Antonius looked down at in the small blind and reraised to $30,400. Ivey folded. Robl moved all-in for $113,900 and Antonius called, making the pot $299,600. Why did you decide to flat Iveys raise? I mean, I could have raised. I just didnt want to reraise and have Ivey four-bet. Id be in a tough spot and not really know what to do. Its kind of a hand where I dont really want to get it in if I three-bet, but I dont want to fold either. Its also very deceiving if I flat there. You wouldnt normally put me on this type of hand when I flat. You said that its kind of hard to put you on this type of hand since you flatted on the button so Antonius move kind of looks like a squeeze. Were you thinking that he might do this with a pretty wide range? Yeah, I mean, Antonius is a good enough player that youre never going to really know exactly what he has when he reraises one time. Its not like hes going to have a super-tight range of hands. He and Ivey were super deep. So, hes not going to be reraising strong hands like ace-jack and ace-ten offsuit because it would get him in trouble playing deep with Ivey out of position. I do think he reraises with a lot of hands, though. Once he reraises, theres already like $50,000 in the pot, and I only have another $100,000 left. You continued playing in the game after losing this pot. How do you, personally, recover and continue playing well. I dont know. Ive played a lot of poker. Sometimes you lose. Sometimes you win. I definitely wasnt happy, but things like this have happened to me a lot in my poker career. Theres no reason not to play your A-game and give money away after that.

The November Niners
The November Niners Now that the last remaining players to compete on one of the most famous, one of the most prestigious and definitely the one of the richest sporting event in the world, are completed, its time to learn a bit of them and have a taste of what could happen in the poker table come November. Dennis Phillips Dennis is a 53-year old truck driver from St. Louis, Missouri. With 900 grand in his pocket and a shot for couple of millions more, expect this humble but eager tournament amateur to slug it out against the established veteran of the trade. Ivan Demidov Ivan is a professional poker player from Moscow who cashed in on three events and landed on the Main Event finals. Surprised as he was, expect this soft-spoken online poker hotshot to twist the tables around in November. Scott Montgomery Scott is a Canadian resident who has the killer combination in WSOP a big bankroll and lots of experience. For those who tune in other tournaments, youve probably seen Scott in LA Poker Classic in 2008 where he finished fifth with almost 300 grand. Peter Eastgate Peter is a 22-year old poker player who hails from Denmark. But make no hasty remarks about his age because this young player is one of Denmarks recognized online professional players since 2005. He cashed $10,000 dollars in for a chance at the felt table, and what do you know, after much of the 6,800 heads are gone, one of the youngest player this year is sitting on the poker table this November. Ylon Schwartz Ylon is a chess player who has been gambling for 25 of his 38 years. He has made his living out of playing poker for several years, and he has no plans of stopping right now. He was the player who has the most number of cash-in in WSOP event with 12. Should he win, expect him to be out of sight for sometime because this New Yorker plans to escape to where you least expect him to be. Darus Suharto Canadian Darus Suharto is set to follow the footsteps of an unknown accountant who shocked the world how number crunchers play poker. An Indonesian-born residing in Toronto Canada, expect Moneymaker-incarnate try to turn an $80 investment into multi-million dollar prize money. David Rheem Probably the most famous of the nine, David Chino Rheem has made several previous appearances in WSOP final table. This 28-year-old professional poker player has been playing poker since he was 18. With fear set aside and Lady Luck in place, Chino is ready to take on the final table challenge. Craig Marquis This 23-year-old poker player hailing from Arlington, Texas is the one who beat Hamricks AJ out of the tournament with pocket queens. Expect Lady Luck to flutter around this young poker player, especially when you realized he was just playing poker for 18 months. Kelly Kim He maybe a wee bit shorthanded when it comes to bankroll, but dont expect him to back out just yet. A California-based business analyst who traded his portfolio for some chips, he has four months worth of time to think about how to make his narrow way to victory this November.

Stay Stacked: You (Don’t) Snooze, You Lose
October 19 2011, Lynn Gilmartin Related Articles Stay Stacked: Breathe Away Your Tilt Stay Stacked: The Wrong Grind for Your Grind? Stay Stacked: On the Grind with “On the Mac” Share It Tags Fitness and Health, Poker Strategy Print There are so many popular options to help players improve their games, whether it is in-depth books, strategy videos, or one-on-one tutoring sessions with mental game specialists. What if, though, you spent hundreds of dollars on improving your strategy, yet one essential requirement was missing? Your game could very well be far from its full potential. Sleep: A condition of body and mind such as that which typically recurs for several hours every night, in which the nervous system is relatively inactive, the eyes closed, the postural muscles relaxed, and consciousness practically suspended. Im writing this as I finish up work in Colombia for the PokerStars.net Latin American Poker Tour and forcing myself to remain awake until my shuttle picks me up at 6 a.m., in just two hours. The idea of not sleeping all night is certainly not an easy one unless its a rare occasion involving a pair of dancing shoes, vodka and amazing music. As my night at work progressed and I got more and more tired, I could feel myself becoming more forgetful, irritable and demotivated. It made me think of the players sitting at the final table after more than 12 hours of play, and then of all the online tournaments that continue through all hours of the night. This enticed me to look further into the affects of ripping ourselves off of our nightly slumber. When we miss sleep in order to keep up with our 24/7 world, we pay a price with our ability to learn, our health and safety, and our quality of life. Harvard Medical School A Harvard Health Publication explains that getting enough sleep for your body assists in learning and memory. Without that, what hope do you have at the table? An article in Issue 143 of Wellbeing, Australias leading health and living magazine, goes into detail about how sleep is essential for mental and physical health. When you sleep, you rejuvenate your prana (life-force energy). When your prana runs low, not only do you feel lethargic, but your mental state is negatively affected, allowing you to become prone to negative emotions such as sadness, depression, frustration and guilt. It’s hard enough to control tilt as it is, imagine how much more susceptible we are after a late night? After renewing your prana with a solid night of sleep, you naturally feel more positive and enthusiastic about life in general. Further studies even show that long-term sleep deficits can lead to all sorts of serious physical and mental illnesses. The following diagram, courtesy of mDhil, outlines these affects. Source: mDhil.com How Much Do You Need? I only just figured out my optimal length of sleep recently. If I sleep for too long, I feel just as bad as if I hadnt slept enough. If you havent already figured out how many hours your body requires, then its basically through a process of trial and error. Adults are recommended to have between seven to nine hours of sleep per night. On days that youre not obliged to get up at a particular time, gauge how many hours it is that you naturally wake and how you feel. On some other nights, set your alarm to give you seven hours, eight hours, and so on. In general, if you wake up feeling like life sucks, you havent had enough sleep. If you wake up feeling really dull and lethargic, youve had too much. I realized that when my alarm goes off after seven hours of sleep, my eyes are wide-open. When I convince myself to stay in bed for another hour, I then wake up on that eighth hour feeling so low in energy and its even hard to drag myself out of bed. How Do You Get It? Sleeping is a sensory experience and should only happen in a dark, cool, quiet room. If youre having trouble with falling, or staying, asleep, then here are some tips how to achieve your ultimate slumber: Timing Yes, this is almost impossible for a poker player, but sticking to a schedule helps your body set its internal rhythm and your body will become “trained” to know when it’s time to sleep. Ensuring that you sleep only at night will help you achieve the perfect sleep environment of darkness and silence. Exercise There are countless health benefits to exercising. Apart from the obvious, helping you sleep is one of them. This is the recovery time for your body and the more you exert it, the more it will crave rest to recoup. Just be sure to not exercise too late at night. Exercising vigorously right before bed or within about three hours of your bedtime can actually make it harder to fall asleep. Vigorous exercise right before bed stimulates your heart, brain and muscles the opposite of what you want at bedtime. It also raises your body temperature right before bed, which, you’ll soon discover, is not what you want. Discovery Fit & Health On the other hand, there is one form of exercise that is beneficial right before bed: yoga. There are plenty of free resources on the Internet to learn some basic poses, including this YouTube video I found that is specifically for before bed: Eating Ensure that your last meal of the day is not less than two hours before going to bed. Not only will that help you prevent putting on those extra pounds, but this allows for digestion to be done and dusted by the time you want to rest your body. Also, if all of the reasons in The Right Grind for Your Grind? edition of Stay Stacked weren’t enough for you to avoid caffeine when hitting the felt, then perhaps knowing that it disrupts your ability to sleep at night, will. Turn Off Electronics Its safe to assume that most of us reading this article are guilty of sitting on the laptop in bed until the last minute before you fall asleep. Either that, or watching the television. Not only does the light from our favorite devices suppress melatonin production, but television can actually stimulate the mind, rather than relaxing it. Try listening to music instead, or pick up book! Relaxation Techniques Check out Stay Stacked: Breath Away Your Tilt for more information on the benefits of meditation and breathing techniques to reduce stress. The breathing technique outlined in the article is a simple, yet incredibly effective one to do when youre lying in bed. Write Notes If you have a lot on your “life” plate and find yourself waking up throughout the night with thoughts, worries or ideas, then keep a pen and notebook next to your bed and write these thoughts down each time they disrupt your sleep. That way you wont worry about forgetting the idea or concern, and can be confident that you will handle it with clear vision in the morning.
